'Why 1982?' Part I - How to Kickstart a New Year

Updated: Sep 3, 2021

Close your eyes - imagine this...

The year of 1982 begins quietly. For once, the planet seems at peace. Nothing earth-shattering has happened - yet. Unless you count the premiere of ‘Late Night With David Letterman’ on February 1st or Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ celebrating 402 weeks on music charts (duh - it's a spectacular.) But for the most part, it’s all sports news, miscellaneous tv awards and random world records. It's only until February 20th, when heavy metal rocker Ozzy Ozbourne gets up on stage and bites the head off a live bat in Des Moines, Iowa - did you really think it was rubber Ozzy? Did you? - that he single-handedly kickstarts the year and his show in Iowa becomes one of the most bizarre events of 1982.
